(29 Julie 1846 – 14 November 1921) cried "the Redemptress" wis the Princess Imperial (heir presumptive tae the throne) o the Empire o Brazil an the Empire's regent on three occasions. Born in Rio de Janeiro as the eldest dochter o Emperor Pedro II an Empress Teresa Cristina, she wis a member o the Brazilian branch o the Hoose o Braganza (Portuguese: Bragança). After the daiths o her twa brithers in infancy, she wis recognised as her father's heir presumptive. She married a French prince, Gaston, Coont o Eu, in an arranged mairiage, an they haed three sons.
During her faither's absences abroad, Isabel acted as regent. In her third and final regency, she actively promoted and ultimately signed a law, named Lei Áurea or the Golden Law, emancipating all slaves in Brazil. Even though the action was broadly popular, there was strang opposition to her succession to the throne. Her gender, strong Catholic faith and marriage tae a foreigner were seen as impediments against her, an the emancipation o the slaves generated dislike among powerful planters. In 1889, her family was deposed in a militar coup, an she spent the last 30 years o her life in exile in Fraunce. signed her private letters as "Isabel, Coontess o Eu"
