Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis[Note 1] (German: [ɪˈɡnaːts ˈzɛml̩vaɪs]; Hungarian: Semmelweis Ignác Fülöp; 1 Julie 1818 – 13 August 1865) wis a Hungarian physeecian o ethnic-German auncestry,[2][3][4] nou known as an early pioneer o antiseptic procedurs.

  1. The name "Semmelweis" is nae spelled wi ss as in weiss, but uises the shorter suffix -weis (it omits the seicont s). Semmelweis means "breid row" or "bun-white".
