Moont Hoverla (Ukrainian: Говерла, Hoverla; Hungarian: Hóvár; Romanie: Hovârla; Goverla, Pols: Howerla) at 2,061 metres (6,762 ft), is the heichest moontain in Ukraine an pairt of the Carpathian Moontains. The moontain is locatit in the Eastren Beskids, in the Chornohora region. The slopes are covered with beech and spruce forests, above which thare is a belt of sub-alpine meadows called polonyna in Ukrainian. At the eastren slope thare is the main spring of the Prut River. The name is of Hungarian oreegin and means 'snaw fortress'. Hoverla is composed of saundstone, a sedimentary rock teep.
The date of the first ascent is unkent. In late 19th century the moontain became a notable tourist attraction, especially amang tourists frae nearby ceeties of Galicie. In 1880 the first tourist route between the peak of Hoverla and Krasny Luh wis marked by Leopold Wajgel of the Galician Tatra Society. The following year the first tourist shelter wis foondit thare.
In the 20th century the moontain increasingly gained popularity as an extreme sports steud. Some routes are clessifeed as 1A in the winter period (frae late autumn tae Met), according tae the Soviet grading seestem. Nowadays because of its promeenence too money unskilled extreme-lovers are taking attempts tae climb it in winter, resulting in regular frostbite or even daiths. The maist popular approach tae the summit stairts frae the tour-basa Zaroslyak on the moontain's east face and gains mair than 3,600 vertical feet (1,100 meters) alang a steep path with few switchbacks. Thare is a steeper route (mairked with blue signs) and a mair gentle one but a lengthier ane (mairked with green).
