The date of the first ascent is unkent. In late 19th century the moontain became a notable tourist attraction, especially amang tourists frae nearby ceeties of Galicie. In the 20th century the moontain increasingly gained popularity as an extreme sports steud. Some routes are clessifeed as 1A in the winter period (frae late autumn tae Met), according tae the Soviet grading seestem. Thare is a steeper route (mairked with blue signs) and a mair gentle one but a lengthier ane (mairked with green).

In October 2007 the new Richt pro-Roushie Eurasia Pairty-affiliatit “Eurasian Youth Union” vandalized the official Ukrainian state seembols that haed been placed on the summit of Hoverla.[2]
