Afore German reunification in 1989 it wis pairt o East Berlin. Situatit at the eastren rim o Berlin, the aurie is mainly a lairge hoosin estate frae the 1980s, made up o Plattenbau (concrete slab) biggins.

The historic veelage of Helwichstorpp wis first mentioned in a 1375 land registry o Emperor Charles IV o Luxembourg, then Margrave o Brandenburg an aw. The ceety o Berlin acquired the umwhile Hellersdorf manor in 1886; it wis feenally incorporatit bi the 1920 Greater Berlin Act as a pairt o the Lichtenberg burgh. Durin German reunification on 3 October 1990, a smaw pairt o Honow (primarily aroond the last twa stations o U5) wis annexed bi this burgh.
