Halti (Finnish: Halti, rarely Haltiatunturi, Northren Sami: Háldičohkka, Swadish: Haldefjäll) is a fell at the mairch atween Norawa an Finland. The peak (elevation 1,365 m (4,478 ft)) o the fell, cried Ráisduattarháldi, is in Norawa, on the mairch atween the municipalities o Nordreisa an Gáivuotna–Kåfjord, aboot 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) north o the mairch wi Finland.[2] The heichest pynt o the fell on the Finnish side is at 1,324 m (4,344 ft) abuin sea level, an thus the heichest pynt in the kintra. The Finnish side o Halti belongs tae the municipality o Enontekiö in the province o Lapland.

The heichest pynt in Finland is on a spur o Ráisduattarháldi at 1,324 m (4,344 ft) kent as Hálditšohkka at the mairch o Norawa. The peak proper is nae in Finland; the mairch merker is oan a slope.[3] The heichest moontain whase peak is in Finland is Ridnitšohkka, at 1,316 m (4,318 ft) an a few kilometers frae Halti. Halti wis measurit an mapped bi the Finnish person Erkki Perä.

The reason for the mairch bein the wey it is can be traced tae a Swadish-Dens border treaty in 1734, when Norawa belonged tae Denmark an Finland wis pairt o Swaden. The treaty specifees the mairch anelie bi some o its biggest naitural featurs like moontains. Thus, internaitional boondary commissions waud walk the border an place border merkers whur it wis convenient. The actual mairch wis then agreed tae lie on a straight line atween these merkers, as wis the uisual practice at the time.[4]

A 55 km (34 mi) trekkin path leads frae Saana, Kilpisjärvi tae Halti. An easier route goes frae a local road (open in simmer anelie) gaein frae Birtavarre in Norawa, aroond 6 km (3.7 mi) hikin tae the heichest pynt in Finland. The route is rocky an nae really adoptit tae hikin.

Proposed border chynge[eedit | eedit soorce]

In 2015, a group o Norse bygane a campaign tae gie the peak o Hálditšohkka tae Finland for its centenary in 2017 bi muivin the mairch atween the twa kintras bi 200 m (660 ft).[5] The idea gained substantial public support in baith kintras, an in Julie 2016 it wis reportit that the Prime Meenister o Norawa, Erna Solberg wis seriously conseederin ceding the peak.[6] Norawa ultimately chose nae tae muive the mairch, citin the Norse consteetution's defineetion o the kintrs as an "indiveesible an inalienable" realm.[7]
