Opel Kadett D 1980

  • According to the UK tax collectors' database (DVLA) the car had a 1297cc engine. It was first registered on 14 May 1980, and ceased to be taxed for use on public roads on 1 October 1994.
  • Reflections on the windscreen indicate that it was a "toughened zone" screen, then mainstream, but in retrospect seriously nightmarish if hit by a sharp stone while driving.
  • Also noteworthy is the positioning of exterior wing mirrors on the exterior wings. Before 1980, regulations had been introduced requiring that, for new cars, an exterior mirror be placed on the drivers' side door. In an age before miniaturised motors to change the angle of the glass became widespread, it was believed that placing interior mirrors on the door made them easier for the driver to adjust correctly. This particular car appears to have both arrangements in combination, suggesting an owner who had grown used to wing mirrors on the wings and was not about to abandon then simply because the car had been delivered with a door mirror.
