An ellipse obtained as the intersection o a cone wi an inclined plane.

In mathematics, an ellipse is a curve on a plane surroondin twa focal pynts such that a straicht line drawn frae ane o the focal pynts tae ony pynt on the curve an then back tae the ither focal pynt haes the same length for every pynt on the curve. As such, it is a generalization o a circle which is a special type o an ellipse that haes baith focal pynts at the same location. The shape o an ellipse (hou 'elangatit' it is) is representit bi its eccentricity which for an ellipse can be ony nummer frae 0 (the leemitin case o a circle) tae arbitrarily close tae but less nor 1.
