Ef (Ф ф; italics: Ф ф) is a Cyrillic letter, commonly representin the voiceless labiodental fricative /f/, like the pronunciation o ⟨f⟩ in "fill". The Cyrillic letter Ef is romanized as ⟨f⟩.

History[eedit | eedit soorce]

The Cyrillic letter Ef wis derived frae the Greek letter Phi (Φ φ). It merged wi an eliminatit letter Fita (Ѳ) in the Roushie alphabet in 1918.

The name o Ef in the Early Cyrillic alphabet is фрьтъ (fr̥tŭ or frĭtŭ), in later Kirk Slavonic an Roushie fairm it acame фертъ (fert).

In the Cyrillic numeral seestem, Ef haes a value o 500.

Uisage[eedit | eedit soorce]

The Slavic leids practically dae nae hae native wirds containin /f/; this soond, which did nae exist in Proto-Indo-European, arose in Greek an Latin frae PIE *bʰ (which yielded Slavic /b/) an in the Germanic leids frae PIE *p (which remained unchynged in Slavic). The letter ф is, tharefore, almaist exclusively foond in wirds o foreign origin, especially Greek (frae ph an sometimes frae th), Latin, French, German, Inglis, an Turkic.

Few native Slavic wirds wi this letter (in different leids) are examples o onomatopoeia (like Roushie verbs фукать, фыркать etc.) or reflect sporadic pronunciation shifts, for example:

  • frae пв /pv/: Serbie уфати 'tae hope' (cf. Kirk Slavonic уповати 'tae hope')
  • frae хв /xv/: Macedonie сфати '(he) unnerstaunds' (cf. Kirk Slavonic схватити 'tae take, tae catch')
  • frae х /x/: Roushie toponym Фили 'Fili' (frae хилый 'sickly')

Roushie[eedit | eedit soorce]

Ef is the twenty-seicont (if Yo is includit) letter o the Russian alphabet. It represents the consonant /f/ unless it is afore a palatalizing vowel when it represents /fʲ/.
