E nummers are codes for substances which can be uised as fuid additives for uise within the European Union[1] an Swisserland (the "E" staunds for "Europe").[2] Thay are commonly foond on fuid labels throughoot the European Union.[3] Safety assessment an approval are the responsibility o the European Fuid Safety Authority.[4]

Havin a single unified leet for fuid additives wis first agreed upon in 1962 wi colours. In 1964, the directives for preservatives wur addit, 1970 for antioxidants an 1974 for the emulsifiers, stabilisers, thickeners an gellin agents.[5]
