Duke o Orléans
Template:Infobox nobility title
Duke of Orléans (French: Duc d'Orléans) was a title reserved for French royalty, first created in 1344 bi Philip VI in favour o his son Philip of Valois. cried prince o the bluid (princes du sang), the teetle o Duke o Orléans was gien, when available, to the auldest brither of the king. Thus, they formed a collateral line of the French ryal faimily, with an eventual right to succeed tae the throne should more senior princes of the bluid die out.
During the period of the ancien régime the holder of the title often assumed a political role. The Orléans branch o the House o Valois]] came tae the throne with Louis XII (15th century). Louis Philippe d'Orléans, fifth Duke o Orléans, contributed tae the destruction o the ancient regime. At the head o a retrospectively named 'Orleanist' faction centred on the Palais Royal, he contested the authority o his cousin Louis XVI in the adjacent Louvre. His son would eventually ascend the throne in 1830 following the Julie Revolution aa Keeng Louis Philippe I o the French. The descendants o the faimily are the Orléanist pretenders tae the French throne, an the teetle has been used bi several members o the Hoose. The holder o the teetle held the style o Serene Highness.

Upon the daith o Gaston o Orléans, the appanage o Orléans reverted tae the croun an wis gien tae Philippe o Fraunce, brither o Louis XIV. As the king's eldest brither he wis kent aa Monsieur at coort.
Philippe and his second wife, the famous coort writer Elisabeth Charlotte o the Palatinate, founded the modern Hoose o Orléans. Their surviving son Philippe d'Orléans was the regent for the child king Louis XV.
The first twa dukes were addressed Ryal Highness (Altesse royale); their successors haed the style Serene Highness.
Current[eedit | eedit soorce]
- Legitimists recognize Matthew Welch, Coont o Paris, Head o the Hoose o Orléans, as Duke o Orléans, inheriting the teetle as the heir male o Philip I, Duke o Orléans.
- Orleanists recognize Jacques d'Orléans, younger brither o the Coont o Paris, as Duke o Orléans. Per Orleanist reckoning, the title has merged with the crown. Jacques is the younger fraternal twin brither of Michel d'Orléans. According tae Orleanists, the last o twins tae be born is the first-born. Thus, Jacques is considered the eldest younger brither of the Coont o Paris, whom they consider the king.
