Charles III (17 September 879 – 7 October 929), cried the Simple or the Straightforward (frae the Laitin Carolus Simplex),[lower-alpha 1] wis the Keeng o Wastren Francie frae 898 till 922 an the Keeng o Lotharingie frae 911 till 919–23.

Notes[eedit | eedit soorce]

  1. His nickname 'simplex' or the simple is misleadin. Charles wis neither simple in ony way nor stupid, althou he wis cried Charles the Stupid bi a later chronicler for an incident in 919 whaur he abandoned his men. The Laitin 'Simplex' wis gien tae him meanin straichtforward as in lyal or wioot guile. The nickname 'the Simple' haes stuck with him even thou its meanin has been corruptit.[1]
