Cerro Azul is a ceety in the Mexican state o Veracruz. Locatit in the state's Huasteca Baja region, it serves as the municipal seat for the surroondin municipality o the same name.

In the 2005 INEGI Census, the ceety reportit a total population o 23,573.[1]

The steid haed been a 10,000-acre (40 km2) aurie o rollin plains an hills uised for cattle grazin (potreros). Hunders o little asphalt springs dottit the aurie whaur cattle bones coud be seen caucht in the black seepage. Ile drillin in the aurie began in 1906.

The toun's population grew exponentially follaein the drillin o the Cerro Azul No. 4 well, at the time the warld's lairgest pumpin 260,000 barrels per day (BPD), in Februar 1916. The well wis drilled bi Herbert Wylie for the Mexican Petroleum Company, then controlled bi Californie ileman Edward L. Doheny. When the well came in the soond coud be heard 16 miles (26 km) awa in Casiano, an shot a stream o ile 598 feet (182 m) intae the air, sendin ile in a twa-mile (3-km) radius. Ower the next 14-years the well wad produce ower 57 millions barrels. Doheny shapit the Pan American Petroleum and Transport Company, o which the Mexican Petroleum Company portion wad later become the Pemex.[2]

The municipality o Cerro Azul wis creatit on 27 November 1963, an the ceety wis gien ceety status on 6 Dizember 1983.
