The canton o Uri (German: Kanton Aboot this soondUri ) is ane o the 26 cantons o Swisserland an a foondin member o the Swiss Confederation. It is locatit in Central Swisserland. The canton's territory covers the valley o the Reuss atween the St. Gotthard Pass an Loch Lucerne. The offeecial leid o Uri is (the Swiss variety o Staundart) German, but the main spoken leid is the Alemannic Swiss German dialect called Urner German [de]. Uri wis the anerly canton whaur the childer in schuil haed to learn Italian as thair first foreign leid. But in the schuil year o 2005/2006 this wis chynged tae Inglis as in maist ither cantons. The population is aboot 35,000 o which 3,046 (or 8.7%) are foreigners.[3]
