Buynaksk (Roushie: Буйна́кск) is a toun in Dagestan, Roushie, locatit at the fuithills o the Greater Caucasus on the Shura-Ozen River, 40 kilometers (25 mi) soothwast o the republic's caipital Makhachkala. Population: 62,623 (2010 Census);[3] 61,437 (2002 Census);[5] 56,783 (1989 Census);[6] 40,000 (1970).

Buynaksk wis foondit in 1834 as a fortifeed ootpost Temir-Khan-Shura (Темир-Хан-Шура) near the ruins o medieval Balanjar. It wis grantit toun status in 1866. In 1920, it wis the centre o the ephemeral Muntainous Republic o the Northren Caucasus. On 13 November 1920, the govrenment o the Roushie SFSR declared Dagestan's autonomy durin the congress o the Dagestani fowk, which teuk place in Temir-Khan-Shura. In 1922, the toun wis renamed Buynaksk in honour o a revolutionar Ullubiy Buynaksky. In Mey 1970, Buynaksk wis badly damagit bi an yirdquauk.

In 1999, a car bomb ootside an apairtment biggin hoosin the faimilies o militar officers killed saxty-fower fowk.[7]

On 13 August 2009, Buynaksk wis the steid o twa attacks associatit wi the growin violence throuoot Dagestan an neebourin Chechnie. Aboot ten men first opened fire wi automatic weapons on a polis post, killin fower officers. The gunmen then entered a nearbi sauna complex an killed seiven female employees.[8]

Athin the framewirk o admeenistrative diveesions, Buynaksk serves as the admeenistrative centre o Buynaksky Destrict, even tho it is no a pairt o it.[1] As an admeenistrative diveesion, it is incorporatit separately as the Toun o Buynaksk—an admeenistrative unit wi the status equal tae that o the destricts.[1] As a municipal diveesion, the Toun o Buynaksk is incorporatit as Buynaksk Urban Okrug.[2]
