British Energy was the UK's mucklest electricity generation company bi volume, before bein taken over bi Électricité de France (EDF) in 2009. British Energy operated eight former UK state-owned nuclear pouer stations an one coal-fired pouer station.
From 1 July 2010 the rebranding o British Energy locations an communications tae EDF Energy commenced as part o its incorporation in tae the parent group, following around 17 month o dual branding. This was concluded with the renaming o the operating company from British Energy Generation Limited to EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Limited on 1 July 2011.

In 2009, the British Energy subsidiary group was structured as follows:
- British Energy Group plc: holding company, a wholly owned subsidiary o EDF S.A.
- British Energy Generation Ltd: dominant subsidiary; owned an ran the muckle pouer stations, was licensed to operate nuclear pouer stations.
- District Energy Ltd: owned four modern 10 MWe naitural gas fuelled pouer plants.
- British Energy Renewables Ltd: participated in a small number o renewable pouer projects.
- Lewis Wind Power Ltd: joint venture with AMEC tae develop a proposed wind farm on the island o Lewis.
