Babushkinsky Destrict (Roushie: Ба́бушкинский райо́н) is a admeenistrative[1] an municipal[3] destrict (raion), ane o the twinty-sax in Vologda Oblast, Roushie. It is locatit in the sootheast o the oblast an borders wi Nyuksensky Destrict in the north, Kichmengsko-Gorodetsky Destrict in the northeast, Nikolsky Destrict in the east, Kologrivsky an Chukhlomsky Destricts o Kostroma Oblast in the sooth, an wi Totemsky Destricts in the wast. The aurie o the destrict is 7,761 square kilometers (2,997 sq mi).[4] Its admeenistrative centre is the landwart locality (a selo) o imeni Babushkina.[2] Destrict's population: 12,779 (2010 Census);[5] 14,994 (2002 Census);[9] 18,037 (1989 Census).[10] The population o imeni Babushkina accoonts for 31.6% o the destrict's population.[5]

The Unzha crosses the soothren pairt o the destrict frae east tae wast, an mony rivers in the centre an the sooth o the destrict drain intae the Unzha. The rivers in the northeast o the destrict drain intae the Sharzhenga, the left tributar o the Yug. The rivers in the wast drain intae various richt tributars o the Sukhona, sic as the Tolshma, the Ledenga, an the Staraya Totma.

The aurie wis oreeginally populatit bi the Finno-Ugric peoples an then colonisit bi the Novgorod Republic. In the 12t century, Totma an the surroondin auries wur awready unner the control o Novgorod. Efter the faw o Novgorod, the aurie became a pairt o the Grand Duchy o Moscow. In the 14t century, salt wis discovered in the glen o the Ledenga, an the selo o Ledengskoye (nou cried imeni Babushkina) became kent for its salt production.[12]

In 1937, Northren Oblast wis split intae Arkhangelsk Oblast an Vologda Oblast. Ledengsky Destrict remained in Vologda Oblast iver syne, but wis renamit Babushkinsky in 1941.[13] Durin the abortive Khrushchyov admeenistrative reform o the 1960s, Babushkinsky Destrict wis briefly disestablisht in 1962 an then reestablisht in 1965.[8]

In 1918, Northren Dvina Govrenorate wi the admeenistrative centre in Veliky Ustyug wis establisht on the auries previously in the northeast o Vologda Govrenorate. In 1924, the uyezds in Northren Dvina Govrenorate wur abolisht an replacit wi the destricts. On 10 Juin 1924, Roslyatinsky Destrict wis establisht, amang ithers. The admeenistrative centre o Roslyatinsky Destrict wis the selo o Roslyatino. In 1929, Northren Dvina Govrenorate wis mergit intae Northren Krai. On 30 Julie 1931, Roslyatinsky Destrict wis mergit intae Ledengsky Destrict, then in 1935 it wis re-establisht, an on 22 November 1960 Roslyatinsky Destrict wis abolisht again, an its aurie wis dividit atween Babushkinsky an Nikolsky Destricts.[8][13]
