Aquileia (/ˌækwɪˈliːə/; Friulian: Acuilee/Aquilee/Aquilea,[1] Venetian: Aquiłeja/Aquiłegia, German: Aglar) is an auncient Roman ceety in Italy, at the heid o the Adriatic at the edge o the lagoons, aboot 10 kilometres (6 mi) frae the sea, on the river Natiso (modren Natisone), the coorse o which haes chynged somewhit syne Roman times.
