Alexander Aleksandrovich Alekhine (Roushie: Алекса́ндр Алекса́ндрович Але́хин, pronounced [ɐlʲɪkˈsandr ɐlʲɪkˈsandrəvʲɪtɕ ɐˈlʲexʲɪn];[1][2] October 31 [A.S. October 19] 1892 – Mairch 24, 1946) wis a Roushie chess grandmaster an the fowert Warld Chess Champion. He is widely considered ane o the greatest chess players ever.

In Scots/Inglis his surname would normally be transleeterated as "Alekhin", but when he acame a French ceetizen, the staundart French transleeteration "Alekhine" acame the correct way tae spell his name in the Laitin alphabet. He acame angry when Roushies sometimes pronoonced the ⟨е⟩ ye o Alekhin as ⟨ё⟩ yo, [ɐˈlʲoxʲɪn], which he regairdit as a Yiddish distortion o his name, an insistit that the correct Roushie pronunciation wis "Al-YEH-khin".
