A wetland is a land aurie that is saturatit wi watter, either permanently or saisonally, such that it taks on the characteristics o a distinct ecoseestem.[1] Primarily, the factor that distinguishes wetlands frae ither laund furms or watter bodies is the characteristic vegetation that is adaptit tae its unique soil condeetions: Wetlands consist primarily o hydric soil, which supports aquatic plants.[2][3]

The watter foond in wetlands can be sautwatter, freshwatter, or brackish.[3] Main wetland types include swamps, marshes, bogs an fens.[4] Sub-types include mangrove, carr, pocosin, an varzea.
