It contains the seicont maist populous Breetish ceety, Birmingham, an the lairger Wast Midlands conurbation, which includes the ceety o Wolverhampton an lairge touns o Dudley, Solihull, Walsall an Wast Bromwich. The ceety o Coventry is locatit athin the Wast Midlands coonty an aw, but is separatit frae the conurbation tae the wast bi several miles o green belt.
The region is geographically diverse, frae the urban central auries o the conurbation tae the rural wastren coonties o Shropshire an Herefordshire which border Wales. The langest river in the UK, the River Severn, traverses the region sootheastwairds, flowin through the coonty touns o Shrewsbury an Worcester, an the Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO Warld Heritage Steid, as birthplace o the Industrial Revolution. Staffordshire is hame tae the industrialisit Potteries conurbation, includin the ceety o Stoke-on-Trent, an the Staffordshire Moorlands aurie, which borders the sootheastren Peak District National Park near Leek. The region encompasses five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty an aw. Warwickshire is hame tae the toun o Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace o the writer William Shakespeare.
