In the course o the admeenistrative reform carriet oot in 1708 bi Peter the Great, the aurie wis split atween Ingermanland Govrenorate (kent frae 1710 as Saunt Petersburg Govrenorate), an frae 1727, separate Novgorod Govrenorate (west) an Archangelgorod Govrenorate (east). In 1780, Archangelogorod Govrenorate wis abolisht an transformit intae Vologda Viceryalty, an in 1796 the latter wis split intae Arkhangelsk an Vologda Govrenorates. Wha is nou Vozhegodsky Destrict wis then split atween Kirillovsky Uyezd o Novgorod Govrenorate (wast) an Kadnikovsky Uyezd o Vologda Govrenorate (east).

In 1894, the construction o the railwey line atween Vologda an Arkhangelsk stairtit. The railwey wis planned tae run ower the shortest route rather than pass throu existin dounsets, an it wis eventually built throu the present aurie the destrict. Vozhega wis foondit in 1895 as a railwey station.

In 1919, northwastren pairts o Kirillovsky Uyezd wur transferred tae Kadnikovsky Uyezd o Vologda Govrenorate an Kargopolsky Uyezd o Olonets Govrenorate. The current territory o Vozhegodsky Destrict wis at this point in Kadnikovsky Uyezd.[12]

On 15 Julie 1929, the uyezds wur abolisht, the govrenorates mergit intae Northren Krai, an Vozhegodsky Destrict wis establisht amang ithers. It became a pairt o Vologda Okrug o Northren Krai.[8] In the follaein years, the first-level admeenistrative diveesion o Roushie kept chyngin. In 1936, the krai wis transformit intae Northren Oblast, which in turn wis split intae Arkhangelsk Oblast an Vologda Oblast in 1937. Vozhegodsky Destrict remained in Vologda Oblast iver syne.
