Verkhovazhye (Roushie: Верховажье) is a landwart locality (a selo) an the admeenistrative centre o Verkhovazhsky Destrict o Vologda Oblast, Roushie, locatit on the richt bank o the Vaga River. It serves as the admeenistrative centre o Verkhovazhsky Selsoviet an aw, ane o the fowerteen selsoviets intae which the destrict is admeenistratively dividit. Municipally, it is the admeenistrative centre o Verkhovazhskoye Landwart Dounset. Population: 5,025 (2010 Census);[2] 5,206 (2002 Census);[6] 4,684 (1989 Census).[7]

On 15 Julie 1929, the uyezds wur abolisht, an Velsky Uyezd wis split intae Velsky, Verkhovazhsky, an Ustyansky Districts. Verkhovazhye became the admeenistrative centre o Verkhovazhsky Destrict. On 30 Julie 1931, Verkhovazhsky Destrict wis mergit intae Velsky Destrict, an on 25 Januar 1935, it was reestablisht.[10][11]
