Tarnogsky Destrict (Roushie: Та́рногский райо́н‎) is a admeenistrative[1] an municipal[3] destrict (raion), ane o the twinty-sax in Vologda Oblast, Roushie. It is locatit in the northeast o the oblast an borders wi Ustyansky Destrict o Arkhangelsk Oblast in the north, Nyuksensky Destrict in the east, Totemsky Destrict in the sooth, an wi Verkhovazhsky Destrict in the wast. The aurie o the destrict is 5,200 square kilometers (2,000 sq mi).[4] Its admeenistrative centre is the landwart locality (a selo) o Tarnogsky Gorodok.[2] Destrict's population: 12,838 (2010 Census preliminary results);[5] 15,363 (2002 Census);[10] 17,402 (1989 Census).[11] The population o Tarnogsky Gorodok accoonts for 41.8% o the destrict's total population.[5]

The destrict is locatit at the divide atween the Sukhona an the Vaga Rivers an belangs thus tae the Northern Dvina's basin. The Sukhona forms the sootheastren border o the destrict. The northeastren pairt o the destrict lees in the basin o the Uftyuga River, the left tributar o the Sukhona. The Uftyuga, as well as its main tributar the Sulonga, flow throu the destrict. The rivers in the central, northren, an wastren pairts o the destrict flow intae the Kokshenga River, the richt tributar o the Vaga. The main tributars o the Kokshenga athin the destrict are the Ileza an the Uftyuga (a different one from the tributar o the Sukhona).

Amaist the whole o the destrict is covered bi coniferous forests (taiga). The exception are the meadaes in the floodplains.

Novgorod merchants uised the Sukhona River as ane o the main waterweys leadin tae the White Sea an the Pechora. Awready in the 12t century, Totma an the surroondin auries wur unner Novgorod's control. Efter the faw o Novgorod, the aurie became a pairt o the Grand Duchy o Moscow. Tarnogsky Gorodok wis first mentioned in the chronicles in 1453.[8] The aurie producit crops, an the Kokshenga an the Vaga wur uised tae transport bread tae Arkhangelsk.

In the course o the admeenistrative reform carriet oot in 1708 bi Peter the Great, the aurie wis includit intae Vazhsky Uyezd o Archangelgorod Govrenorate. In 1780, the govrenorate wis abolisht an transformit intae Vologda Viceroyalty. The latter wis abolisht in 1796, an the pairt o it which includit Tarnogsky Gorodok became Vologda Govrenorate. The aurie became a pairt o Totemsky Volost wi the seat in Totma. In the 1890s, Tarnogsky Gorodok became the seat o Shevdenitskaya Volost.[8]

On 25 Januar 1935, Tarnogsky Destrict wi the admeenistrative centre in Tarnogsky Gorodok wis establisht on the territories umwhile in Nyuksensky an Totemsky Destricts.[8] In the follaein years, the first-level admeenistrative diveesion o Roushie kept chyngin. In 1936, Northren Krai wis transformit intae Northern Oblast. In 1937, Northren Oblast itsel wis split intae Arkhangelsk Oblast an Vologda Oblast. Tarnogsky Destrict remained in Vologda Oblast iver syne wi the exception o the short period in 1962-1965, when some o the destricts wur mergit.

The economy o the destrict is based on timber industrie.[9] Fuid industrie is present an aw; in pairticular, thare is a butter factory in Tarnogsky Gorodok an a fuid factory in the selo o Krasnoye.

Thare are saxteen ferms in the destrict: thirteen o thaim produce milk, twa produce meat, an ane produces eggs.[12]

Tarnogsky Gorodok staunds on the pavit road connectin Oktyabrsky in Arkhangelsk Oblast in the north wi Totma in the sooth an Veliky Ustyug in the east. A short stretch o the road connectin Vologda an Veliky Ustyg runs athin the limits o the destrict alang the left bank o the Sukhona. Thare are local roads in the destrict an aw. Thare is regular passenger bus service oreeginatin frae Tarnogsky Gorodok.

While the Sukhona is navigable athin the destrict, thare is nae passenger navigation.

Tarnogsky Gorodok wis servit bi the Tarnogsky Gorodok Airport which is currently defunct.[13]

The destrict contains 4 objects classifee'd as cultural an historical heritage bi the Roushie Federal law, an addeetionally 123 objects classifee'd as cultural an historical heritage o local importance.[14] Maist o these are firthen ferms an kirks built prior tae 1917.
