Ta'izz (Arabic: تعز Taʿizz‎), or Taiz, is a ceety in the Yemeni Heichlands, near the famous Mocha port on the Reid Sea, lyin at an elevation o aboot 1,400 metres abuin sea level. It is the caipital o Ta'izz Govrenorate. Wi a population o ower 600,000 in 2005, it is the third lairgest ceety in Yemen efter the caipital Sana'a an the soothren port o Aden.

Ta'izz haes a dramatic settin whaur the roads run up an doun the muntain sides. Abuin the ceety rises the 3,006 metres heich Sabir Muntain. The ceety is famous for the auncient Jewish Sharab.

The name of the city appeared first at the 6th century of Hijra, 12th CE, when CEO Mahdi, the brother of Salah ad-Din, arrived in Yemen in the year 1173 CE. Ta'izz was refortified by Salah ad-Din’s brother, Taktakeen, the Ayyubid.

The seicont Rasulid Keeng, Almaddhafar (1288 CE), established Ta'izz as the seicont caipital o the Rasulid Dynasty efter Zabid.

Ibn Battutah visitit Taiz in the fowerteent century an describit it as ane o the lairgest an maist bonnie ceeties o Yemen.

Ta'izz remained a wawwed ceety till 1948 when Imam Ahmed made it the seicont caipital o Yemen, allouing for expansion ayont its fortifeed waw.
