Syktyvkar (Roushie: Сыктывкар; IPA: [sɨktɨfˈkar]; Komi: Сыктывкар) is the caipital ceety o the Komi Republic, Roushie. Population: 235,006 (2010 Census preliminary results);[3] 230,011 (2002 Census);[5] 232,117 (1989 Census).[6]

The ceety's current name comes frae Syktyv, the Komi name for the same river, plus kar, meanin "ceety".

Syktyvkar is locatit on the Sysola River, which is the oreegin o its umwhile name Ust-Sysolsk. The ceety is locatit near tae the point whaur the Sysola joins the lairger Vychegda River, which is itsel a branch o the Northren Dvina.

It wis grantit ceety status bi Catherine the Great in 1780, an later became the admeenistrative centre o Komi Autonomous Oblast. It haes retained its position as the Komi caipital syne that point, awtho a lairge influx o ethnic Roushies in the 20t century haes actually left the Komi in a minority thare.

The majority o the population wur merchants an peasants. The main occupations o the inhabitants wur agricultur, cattle-breedin, huntin, fishin, an trade.

Bi the beginnin o the 20t century, the population haed grown tae 6,000 fowk. The Tsarist govrenment made the Komi region a place o poleetical exile.

In 1921, Ust-Sysolsk wis given the status o admeenistrative centre o the newly formit Komi Autonomous Soviet Republic. It wis given the name o Syktyvkar, which is Komi for "a toun on the Sysola". In 1936, Syktyvkar became the caipital o the Komi ASSR.
