At this time the municipality o Cozumel wis split intae twa, wi the mainland section constitutin the new municipality o Solidaridad. Its municipal seat is the toun o Playa del Carmen. On 13 Mairch 2008 Solidaridad wis separatit frae the new Tulum Municipality, as a result its laund aurie an population wis adjustit.[2]

The municipality haes a population o 159,310 accordin tae the results o the Population an Hoosing Census o 2010 conductit bi the Naitional Institute o Statistics an Geografie (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía), o these, 83,468 are men an 75,842 are weemen.[4] Bi this time, Tulum Municipality wis awready separatit frae Solidaridad.
Currently maist o its population are immigrants, mainly frae the sootheastren states o Mexico; but, accordin tae the Naitional Institute o Migration, Mexico (Instituto Nacional de Migración de México), the municipality haes 12 percent o its population o foreign oreegin an aw.
