The Scheldt (Dutch Schelde [ˈsxɛldə], French Escaut) is a 350 km[1] lang river in northren Fraunce, wastren Belgium an the soothwastren pairt o the Netherlands. Its name is derived frae an adjective correspondin tae Auld Inglis sceald "shallow", Modren Inglis shoal, Law German schol, Frisian skol, an Swadish skäll "thin".
