It wis oreeginally pairt o Risaralda Municipality till 1997, when it became an unthirlt municipality athin the Caldas Depairtment. The municipality is pairt o the Lawer Wastren Destrict, 67 km frae Manizales. Its name derives frae the arrival o the foonders on the day o Saunt Joseph, 19 Mairch.
