It is locatit in the center-northwast o the province, limitin wi the depairtments o Nueve de Julio an Vera in the north, San Justo in the east, an Las Colonias an Castellanos in the sooth; tae the wast it shares a short border wi the province o Córdoba an a langer ane wi Santiago del Estero.

The department is the third lairgest in the province an haes aboot 65,000 inhabitants. The heid toun is San Cristóbal (population 14,000).
