Peterheid preeson, kent offeecially as HMP Peterhead is a preeson in the toun o Peterheid in Aiberdeenshire, Scotland.

Peterhead Convict Preeson wis biggit aroond 1888. It wis designed tae hauld 208 preesoners an tae be Scotland's anerlie convict preeson.[1] Occupancy averagit at aroond 350 houiver, until peaking at 455 in 1911.[1] Additional biggins wur completit in 1909, 1960 an 1962, bringin capacity up tae 362.[1] Accordin tae the Scottish Prison Service, the preeson can, at this time, accommodate up tae 142 preesoners.[2]

Till the openin o Peterhead Convict Preeson, Scots convicts wur transportit tae Ingland tae serve thair sentences. The first convicts war receivit in August 1888.

Peterheid suppleed the labour force tae wirk in Stirlinghill Quarry an in the Admiralty Yard attached tae the preeson. Thir convicts supported the wirk o a civilian labour force employed bi the Admiralty tae big the Harbour o Refuge breakwater.

The Admiralty project wis unique in Scotland as it wis servit bi the anerlie state-awned passenger-carryin railwey in its day.

Peterhead Preeson haes a history o poor conditions for preesoners, bein referred tae as "Scotland's gulag, a preeson o nae howp."[3] A 2005 inspection reportit that electricity haed anerlie juist been made available in aw the cells an sloppin oot continues at the preeson.[4]

HMP Peterhead is nou a specialist centre for sex affenders.[5]

Talks on replacin the current preeson wi a new ane began in 2006.[6] Thay wur revivit in November 2006.[7][8]

Demolition o pairt o the preeson began 13 Februar 2012, wi the openin o the new HMP Grampian planned for winter 2013/14.[9]

The new facility is expectit tae hauld aboot 500 male an female preesoners - baith adults an young affenders - frae the Northren Commonty Juistice Authority catchment aurie.[10]
