Muscle car is a term used to refer to a variety o high performance automobiles. The term refers to American 2-door rear wheel drive mid-size caurs equipped with lairge, pouerful, V8s, an sold at an affordable price for street uise an drag racin, formally an informally.

As such, they ar distinct from twa-seat sports caurs and expensive 2+2 GTs intended for high-speed touring and road racing, although in many examples the road holding was substantially upgraded over the model from which it was derived. These upgrades were often a key selling point, and a common misconception is that cornering prowess was dismissed in the development of muscle cars.

Building on the American phenomenon an developing simultaneously in their awn markets, muscle caurs also emerged in their own fashions in Australie, Sooth Africae, the UK, an elsewhere.

[edit] Definition

According to the Juin 1967 issue o Road Test magazine, a "muscle caur" is "Exactly what the name implies. It is a product o the American car industry adhering to the hot rodder's philosophy o taking a small car and putting a BIG engine in it [...] The Muscle Car is Charles Atlas kicking sand in the face o the 98 hp (73 kw) weakling." Author o the book Muscle Cars the quote is drawn frae, Peter Henshaw, furthers that the muscle caur wis designed for straight-line speed, an did not hae the "sophisticated chassis", "engineering integrity" or "lithe appearance" of European high-performance caurs

However, opinions vary as to whether high-performance full-size caurs, compacts, an pony caurs qualify as muscle caurs.
