Kandalakshsky Destrict (Roushie: Кандала́кшский райо́н‎) is an admeenistrative destrict (a raion), ane o the sax in Murmansk Oblast, Roushie.[1] Municipally, it is incorporatit as Kandalakshsky Municipal Destrict.[2] It is locatit in the soothwast o the oblast. The aurie o the destrict is 14,400 square kilometers (5,600 sq mi).[5] Its admeenistrative centre is the toun o Kandalaksha.[1] Destrict's population:[6] 60,140 (2002 Census);[8] 78,239 (1989 Census).[12] The population o Kandalaksha accoonts for 72.0% o the destrict's total population.[6][7]

The destrict wis first established bi the Aw-Roushie Central Executive Committee (VTsIK) Resolution of 29 August 1927 alang wi ither new destricts intae which the Karelie ASSR wis dividit.[13] The destrict includit the territories o Kandalakshskaya an Kovdskaya Volosts an the veelage o Kyurela o Kestengskaya Volost.[13] The admeenistrative centre o the destrict wis in the selo o Kandalaksha.[13]

On 1 Juin 1932, Kandalaksha wis grantit wirk dounset status.[14] On 1 Aprile 1937, the VTsIK adoptit a Resolution on the admeenistrative-territorial structur o the destrict, accordin tae which the destrict includit twa wirk dounsets (Kandalaksha an Nivsky) an five selsoviets (Kandalakshsky, Knyazhegubsky, Kolvitsky, Konets-Kovdozersky, an Kovdsky).[14] On 20 Aprile 1938, Kandalaksha wis grantit a status o toun o destrict significance.[14]

On 28 Mey 1938, the destrict became a pairt o the newly formit Murmansk Oblast,[14] an on 9 Februar 1940, Kandalaksha wis admeenistratively separatit frae the destrict an grantit a status o toun o oblast significance.[14]

Kandalakshsky Destrict wis abolished bi the Decree o the Presidium o the Supreme Soviet o the Soviet Union on 18 August 1948 wi its territory bein admeenistratively subordinatit tae the toun o Kandalaksha.[14] Housomeivver, the destrict wis reinstatit in auld borders bi anither decree on 13 Mairch, 1951.[14] Kandalaksha again became the admeenistrative centre o the destrict.[14]

Bi the Decree o the Presidium o the Supreme Soviet o the Soviet Union, on 24 Februar 1955 Alakurttinsky Selsoviet wis transferred tae Kandalakshsky Destrict frae Kestengsky Destrict o the Karelo-Finnish SSR.[14]

Bi the Decree o the Presidium o the Supreme Soviet o the RSFSR o 19 Mairch 1959, the Cooncils o Deputies o Kandalaksha an o Kandalakshsky Destrict wur mergit intae ane Kandalaksha Toun Cooncil o Deputies.[14] The destrict wis nominally retained as a separate admeenistrative diveesion, but aw its subdiveesions wur admeenistratively subordinatit tae the toun's Cooncil o Deputies.[14] On 1 Februar 1963, the Decree bi the Presidium o the Supreme Soviet o the RSFSR established the new structur o the destricts o Murmansk Oblast, which nae langer includit Kandalakshsky Destrict.[14]

On 2 Dizember 2004, Kandalakshsky Municipal Destrict wis established bi Murmansk Oblast Duma on the territory o Kandalaksha Toun Wi Jurisdictional Territory.[2] The admeenistrative destrict, housomeivver, wis no restored till the law o 11 Aprile 2011 amendit the law on the admeenistrative-territorial diveesions o Murmansk Oblast tae include it.[11]
