Scholars hae different theories on the oreegin o the name "Iaşi".[3] Some argue that the name oreeginates wi the Sarmatian tribe Iazyges (o Iranian oreegin), ane mentioned bi Ovid as "Ipse vides onerata ferox ut ducata Iasyx/ Per media Istri plaustra bubulcus aquas" an "Iazyges et Colchi Metereaque turba Getaque/ Danubii mediis vix prohibentur aquis".
A nou lost inscription on a Roman milestane[4] foond near Osijek, Croatie bi Matija Petar Katančić in the 18t century, mentions the existence o a Jassiorum municipium,[5] or Municipium Dacorum-Iassiorum frae ither sources.[6]
Anither explanation is that the name oreeginatit frae the Iranian Alanic tribe o Jassi. The Hungarian name o the ceety (Jászvásár) literally means "Jassic Mercat"; the antiquatit Romanian name, Târgul Ieşilor (an the ance-favoured Iaşii), mey indicate the same meanin.
Oral sources say that the name mey come frae an airchaic form o the Romanian wird "tae exit" acause the ceety wis an important trade node in the region.[7]
