In medieval times the alpine lands wur awned bi the bishops o Freising an the abbots o Ettal Abbey. In 1803, when the clerical states o Germany wur dissolved, the region wis acquired bi Bavarie.
Geography[edit]
The destrict is locatit in the Bavarie Alps an includes the heichest muntain o Germany, the Zugspitze (2962 m). The heichest peaks are groupit alang the Austrian border, whaur the muntain ridges o the Wettersteingebirge an the Karwendelgebirge rise. Atween them the Isar river runs northwards. North o these ridges there is a valley hoosin the tourist resort o Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The valley thegither wi the surroondin muntains is cried the Werdenfelser Land. Further north the ridges o the Ammergebirge and the Estergebirge rise, which are still ower 2000 m heich. In the northmaist pairts o the destrict there is alpine uplands (aboot 600 m heich). Here the Staffelsee is locatit, a lake o 8 km².
