As o 2005, the municipality haed a total population o 52,168.[1] It covers an aurie o 717.90 km².

In Mairch 2012, authorities discovered the remains o at least 167 fowk in a cave at a ranch in Frontera Comalapa. A subsequent investigation revealed the remains date back tae the pre-Colombie era, atween 700 an 1200. Thare wur nae obvious signs o violence, an offeecials believe the cave wis previously uised as a cemetery. A number o clay wirks wur recovered an aw.[2]
