Geografie [edit]
The municipality is dividit intae the campos o Agüica, Este, Guareiras, Jacán, Laguna Grande, Oeste an Palmillas.[1]
History [edit]
The toun wis foondit in 1846[1] unner the name Nueva Bermeja. In 1851 the railroad reaches the toun. In 1859, it achieves the status o villa (toun) wi the name Colón. The foonder's name is don Martín José Zozaya, who foondit the toun in the umwhile hacienda namit La Bermeja. The deed tae establish this toun wis signed in the ceety o Matanzas in 1836. At the time, don Martín set apairt laund for a cemetery an a kirk. The oreeginal name o the toun wis La Nueva Bermeja. The railroad haed arrivit near the new toun in 1843 but did no cross the toun till 1851. In 1852, Fernando Diago, the awner o the sugar-mill Ponina, inaugurates the first public schuil in toun.

Colón's economy is centered aroond agricultur (sugarcane, tobacco, citrus fruit, honey) an stock raisin. It is an important railwey center an aw.

In 2004, the municipality o Colón haed a population o 71,579.[3] Wi a total aurie o 597 km2 (231 sq mi),[2] it haes a population densitie o 119.9 /km2 (311 /sq mi).
