The cooncils an assemblies o the municipalities o Macau wur abolished on 1 Januar 2002, an their functions transferred tae the Instituto para os Assuntos Cívicos e Municipais, slichtly mair nor 2 years efter Macau became a special admeenistrative region (SAR) o the Fowkrepublic o Cheenae. They haed been put in place unner the admeenistration o Portugal.
The current admeenistrative bouk is the Ceevic an Municipal Affairs Bureau (Portuguese: Instituto para os Assuntos Cívicos e Municipais, Tradeetional Cheenese: 民政總署) unner the Secretariat for Admeenistration an Juistice (Secretaria da Administração e Justiça) o the SAR govrenment.

Efter the reunification wi the Fowkrepublic o Cheenae in 1999, these structurs wur kept proveesionally in place: the Proveesional Municipal Cooncil o Macau (臨時澳門市政執行委員會, Câmara Municipal de Macau Provisória, offeecially in breuken Portuguese, shoud be Câmara Municipal Provisória de Macau), the Proveesional Municipal Cooncil o the Islands (臨時海島市政執行委員會, Câmara Municipal das Ilhas Provisória, offeecially in breuken Portuguese, shoud be Câmara Municipal Provisória das Ilhas), an the Proveesional Municipal Assembly (Assembleia Municipal Provisória, 臨時市政議會) o each municipality.[1]

On 31 Dizember 2001, aw the proveesional organs wur dissolvit an the new Ceevic an Municipal Affairs Bureau (Instituto para os Assuntos Cívicos e Municipais [IACM], 民政總署) teuk on the role o the proveesional municipal cooncils, stairtin frae 1 Januar 2002, unner the Secretariat for Admeenistration an Juistice (Secretaria da Administração e Justiça) o the SAR govrenment.[3][4]
The IACM wis gien a logo Archived 2005-10-22 at the Wayback Machine based on the Cheenese Han character 民, for "civilian".

Thare are seiven pairishes (sing. freguesia) in Macau. 5 are in Concelho de Macau an 2 in Concelho das Ilhas. Unner Portuguese rule, they wur admeenistrative subdiveesions o the municipalities. Efter 1999, they are still offeecially recognisit but for seembolic raisons anerly.
