In order tae restairt Bugatti, a new caur wis needit for the 1950s. The result wis the 1951 Type 101. An evolution o the Type 57, it is considered bi mony tae be the last true Bugatti caur, wi juist seiven produced through 1956. Powured bi the 3.3 L (3257 cc/198 in³) straight-8 frae the Type 57. The seiven chassis wur bodied bi fower different coachbuilders:Gangloff, Guillore, Antem, an Virgil Exner/Ghia.

Six Type 101 chassis wur built efter an initial convertit Type 57 chassis prototype. At least twa mair Type 57s wur an aa convertit tae Type 101 specifications, makin a total o nine Type 101 caurs produced.
The last Type 101 wis built in 1965 bi Ghia designed bi Virgil Exner for the last remainin Type 101 chassis as an attempt tae revive the marque. It wis exhibitit at the Turin Motor Show, but financin coud no be arranged an production plans wur scrapped. Exner awned the caur for mony years, an it haes lately appeared in public at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
