It is locatit tae the north o the kintra, extendin roughly north-sooth frae the Caribbean coast at Cartagena near the mooth o the Magdalena River, then sooth alang the river tae a border wi Antioquia Depairtment. The depairtments o Sucre an Córdoba are locatit tae the wast, an Atlántico Department is tae the north an east (maist o the border formit bi the Canal del Dique). Athort the Magdalena River tae the east is Magdalena Depairtment.
Its caipital is Cartagena, ither important ceeties include Magangué an Turbaco.
