Prior tae the Portuguese invasion in 1519 it served as the caipital o Bahrain an did so again later durin Safavid rule in the seiventeent century. It wis traditionally a centre for Usuli theological thought an haed a lang staundin rivalry wi the Akhbari centre o Diraz.
