Antioquia (Spainyie pronunciation: [anˈtjokja]) is ane o the 32 depairtments o Colombie, locatit in the central northwastren pairt o Colombie wi a narrae section that borders the Caribbean Sea. Maist o its territory is muntainous wi some valleys, hintle o which is pairt o the Andes muntain range. Antioquia haes been pairt o mony territorial diveesions o umwhile kintras creatit ower the present day territory o Colombie, an prior tae the Colombie Constitution o 1886, Antioquia State wis a sovereign govrenment in their awn richt.
The depairtment covers an aurie o 63,612 km² (24,427 sq mi), an haes a population o 5,819,358 (2006 estimate); 6,6 million (2010 estimate). Antioquia borders wi the Córdoba Depairtment an the Caribbean Sea tae the north, Chocó tae the wast, tae the east it borders the depairtments o Bolivar, Santander an Boyaca, an tae the sooth the depairtments o Caldas an Risaralda.
Medellín is Antioquia's caipital ceety, an the seicont lairgest ceety in the kintra. Ither important touns are Santa Fe de Antioquia, the auld caipital locatit on the Cauca, an Puerto Berrío on the Magdalena.

Antioquia is the 6t lairgest depairtment o Colombie. It is predominantly muntainous, crossed bi the Cordillera Central an the Cordillera Occidental o the Andes. The Cordillera Central, further divides tae form the Aburrá valley, in which the caipital Medellín is locatit. The Cordillera Central forms the plateaus o Santa Rosa de Osos an Rionegro.
Despite 80% o the depairtment's territory being muntainous, Antioquia haes a coast on the Caribbean Sea an aw, in the lawland aurie o the Urabá. This aurie haes a tropical climate an is o heich strategical importance due tae its location.

The population of Antioquia is 5,819,358 (2005 estimate), of which more than half live in the metropolitan area of Medellin. The racial composition is:[citation needit]

The local inhabitants o Antioquia are ken as antioqueños. Of the five main regional groups in Colombia, the predominant group in Antioquia are known as paisa, referring to those living in the Paisa region, which covers most of Antioquia, as well as the departments of Caldas, Risaralda and Quindío.
