Öckerö Municipality (Öckerö kommun) is a municipality in Västra Götaland Coonty in wastren Swaden. Its seat is locatit in the toun o Öckerö on the main island, which is an aa cried Öckerö.
The municipality consists o islands in the Northren Gothenburg Airchipelago, juist ootside o Gothenburg. Wi a total aurie o 26.03 km² it is ane o the smawest municipalities o Swaden.
The municipality is ane o vera few in Swaden which haes no been amalgamatit an thus still haes the same aurie as the unit formed oot o a parish (socken) bi the first local govrenment acts o 1862. In the period 1915–1959 there wur a number o municipalsamhällen (a sort o boroughs athin a rural municipality handlin matters o urban character) in the municipality.

The municipality consists o ten year-roond inhabitit islands. They are considered tae stretch frae a renouned lichthoose cried Vinga fyr up tae the coastal toun o Marstrand in the municipality o Kungälv. The ten islands are named:
N.B. that "ö" means "island" in Swedish, hence aw names end wi "ö". E.g. Björkö means "Birch Island".
O these, Hönö is the lairgest wi some 4,800 inhabitants, an Öckerö is an aa fairly lairge wi 3,100. Housomeivver, aw ten are inhabitit bi Fowk aw year aroond. Maist islands hae brig connection atween each ither. Housomeivver, there is nae road connection tae the mainland, juist caur ferries frae wastren Gothenburg. The ferry connections are guid wi a dense schedule. A local referendum in 2003 in Öckerö Municipality rejectit the plans for a futur brig to the mainland.

Durin the Viking Age the islands o Öckerö belanged tae the Norse keengs, an the pairt o the coast wis kent as Älvsyssel. In the 13t century the Keeng Håkan Håkansson o Norawa built hissel a hoose on Öckerö, acause he wis aften aroond there wi his navy.
In 1658 or thereabout, the aurie became Swadish thegither wi Bohuslän.
In the middle of the 18th century, the fishin o herring blossomed into a full scaled industry, and the islands fishing communities flourished for some 50 years.
In the 1950s the coat o airms wur designed. As the main industry haes aaways been fishin, a boat an herrin became seembols. The ten herrins correspond tae the ten islands.
